… was the question recently posed to me by my dear friend, HM. So this blog explains what’s driving M.E. and the overall objective. First of all though, you need to understand how I see the world. Sounds scary, right? Don’t worry, I’m only letting you in on a small and very simple part of my mind, I promise.

Imagine a pyramid. The top block of the pyramid is the child. Supporting that top block is the next row of blocks, the child’s immediate family and caregivers. Finally, the mid-layer of blocks is supported by the bottom layer, which represents the family’s community. Should the stability of the mid-layer be compromised then the top block is at risk of tumbling and falling away to disconnect from the entire pyramid, which in this analogy is society. To be clear, when I’m talking about the mid-layers becoming compromised, I’m talking about parents and carers struggling with their emotional wellbeing.

When we struggle with our emotional wellbeing it’s really easy to slip into some darker places and make some choices that (upon reflection) we don’t love. We know this, there’s oodles of research out there that supports the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours all feed off each other. When we feel blue we see the world in a negative light, which inspires choices that don’t quite reflect the best version of ourselves. And repeat! This couldn’t be more normal, we’ve all been there. Yup, even your (usually) bubbly author. This very normal cycle becomes problematic though when it becomes a ‘stuck in a rut’ kind of a situation, impacting mental health and jeopardising carers’ ability to empower children to thrive. This is where the service technician (M.E.) comes in to reinforce the mid-layer’s self-supporting strengths.

By counselling parents and advocates, Meta Empowerment is ultimately looking to achieve a two-for-one outcome. Clients’ emotional wellbeing is bolstered and, in turn, children’s development benefits from clients’ increased capacity to raise children to the best of their ability. With stronger blocks, we build stronger societies.

So there you have it HM – that’s what M.E. is all about!

(Fun fact 🤓 : HM is also the initials of a man who was the subject of incredibly important research spanning over 50 years that has enlightened our present day knowledge of how memory works. After a bike accident as a child, he suffered terribly debilitating seizures and underwent brain surgery to control them. The surgery came with impairment to HM’s memory encoding processes. He could hold a conversation and recall a string of numbers for 15 minutes but then after a distraction – poof – gone! Every day he woke up and, in his mind, the day before never occurred. He was literally Lucy out of 50 first dates!

Nerd out ✌️ Felicity 😊
